This course is an examination of psychology of human behavior as it relates to crime. The student will be introduced to psychopathology, the sexually violent offender, and serial murder. The student will also examine violent juvenile offenders and the process of psychological conditioning which allows them to commit violent criminal acts. Students will explore current research and theory regarding the effects of specific mental disorders, personality, biological influences, developmental issues, and social/ environmental contributors to both general criminal behaviors, as well as specific crimes. The psychological effects of crime on the victim and society at large will also be explored.

Students will explore current research and theory regarding the effects of specific mental disorders, personality, biological influences, developmental issues, and social/ environmental contributors to both general criminal behaviors, as well as specific crimes. Students will understand and demonstrate the major concepts of: The complexities of the interactions between heredity and environment in development. Developing a system to incorporate the various psychological theories into the legal and criminal/ law enforcement realms. The role of the mental health professional in the treatment and prevention of violence and criminal behavior. Determining those psychological events, which have impacted their lives/ behaviors or the lives/ behaviors of other individuals. Using psychological theories in the evaluative or investigative process to aid in the solution of social problems and criminal behavior. Critically analyzing theoretical viewpoints and research on crime and psychological development/ mental illness and evaluate the significance of same.
