The course looks at the development of English from an historical point of view, as well as a survey of the variants of English in the modern world, covering dialects, creoles, the use of lingua franca and the geographical locations of English as a first language and English as a second language. Students will be able not oly to see the differences between the dialects, but at the same time they will have an insight of the traits and peculiarities which characterize the people, who speak these dialects, as well as their culture as something indispensable in a language. Received Pronunciation of standard British English, and American and Canadian English will be contrasted.

This course aims to help students in achieving these objectives: 1.Students will learn the historical chronological development of English 2. Students will learn about the english language development and its tranformation into a lingua franca 3. Student will observe its synchronic uses in the modern world. 4. Students will expand their knowledges on different dialects used 5. Students will see english as real world linguistic application. 6. Students will gather data from informant and elsewhere, and presented in each class with partners or in teams. 7. Knowing variants of a language helps the students in knowing the world and the psychology as well as the culture of the people where these dialects are spoken.
